Highlight of the 1st Qtr 2017

  • New displacements in Kutkai, Man Wing Gyi (Mansi Tsp.), Laukai and Namtu due to conflict; more than 2,500 people had to flee to temporary evacuation centres and returned to their villages of origin within a few weeks. Besides, more than 6,500 migrant workers from Kokant SAZ returned to their hometowns starting from 6 March 2017.

  • GAD, RRD, Municipal Committee, well-wisher associations and private donors delivered emergency assistance mainly for new IDPs and migrant workers evacuated in urban locations. WASH Cluster partners responded to IDPs in remote locations including Hpai Kawng (close to the Chinese border). Monitoring and follow up actions are needed to ensure WASH services delivered meet minimum standards.

  • Draft guidelines for semi-permanent latrines and bathing spaces have been finalized within Northern Shan sub-cluster (WASH) level.

  • SCI delivered trainings on Hygiene Promotion and Water Treatment for camp committees and hygiene promoters in Namtu in cooperation with Metta and KMSS. SCI also organized a Water Quality Testing training for their staff and invited other WASH cluster partners in Lashio in March 2017.
